The charity recently held its Steps For Life 5K Run & Walk — South Florida fundraising event at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The grateful and supportive team at Rack Electric took part in the race, which raised over &120K for the fight to find a cure for blood cancers.

At Rack Electric we strongly believe that we all have the power to save someone’s life! It’s natural to lend help to our Boca Raton neighbors at the Gift of Life Marrow Registry.

The Steps For Life — South Florida event is unique in that it featured the first time meeting of a recipient and their life-saving donor.

For two families who gave all they had to save a child, it was a monumental and emotional day. Five-year-old leukemia survivor Grant Medeiros met the donor who gave him a critical supply of life-saving bone marrow.

“It’s one of those things that a total stranger saved my son’s life. It just shows you that there are so many great people out there,” said Philip Medeiros, Grant’s father.

Grant’s bone marrow donor echoed a similar opinion. “Having at the time an eight-month-old son, there was no question that I wanted to be able to do this and would hope that if someone else was in this position, they would happily do it for our family,” donor Graeme Ossey explained.

In addition to the five-kilometer run and walk and connecting recipients with their donors, a Superhero Sprint was held for children under six years of age, as well as a certified, chip-timed run for both walkers and runners.

All proceeds will support the Gift of Life Marrow Registry’s mission to cure leukemia and other blood diseases through bone marrow and stem cell transplants. Over 600 runners and walkers preregistered before the event date the day of, the total number of participants exceeds 750 people! The final count doesn’t include supporters like friends, family, and walk-ups who attended the event.

With a charity fundraiser as large as the Steps For Life 5K Run & Walk, behind the scenes support plays an essential role in making sure the experience functions flawlessly.
